Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, Arizona February 29, 1968, page 1 and 2 Vietnam War Wounds Claim Life of Congress Soldier The war in Vietnam came closer to homes and hearts in the tri-county area this week with the sad news of the death of Larry Powell, Congress youth, from wounds received in action in that far away country. The 21-year-old soldier, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ray Powell of Congress, was wounded while serving with the 1st air Cavalry Division and then to the 3rd Marine Hospital. He was later transferred to the U.S. Naval Support Hospital where death came. He was a specialist 4 Class and had been in Vietnam eight months. He had been previously wounded in action and returned to the fighting upon his recovery. As of Tuesday of this week the grieving parents had received no further information regarding their son’s death or when his body will be returned her for services and burial. Larry was born October 8, 1947 in Twin Falls, Idaho. He entered Wickenburg High School as a sophomore in 1962, transferring here from the Marana High School. While attending Wickenburg High from 1962 through 1965 he played football and baseball and was a member of the Letterman’s Club. He enlisted in the army December 12, 1966. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother Gary of Congress.
