Elderly man Killed in City Car Crash
First motor vehicle fatality within the city limits since may 15, 1966, occurred Sunday afternoon at 1:40 when Leo A. Wertheim, age 77, died in Community Hospital of multiple injuries received at 9:50 that morning in a 2-car crash in front of Western Hills Trailer Court on the Prescott Highway.
Investigating police said Mr. Wertheim, alone in his car, pulled onto the highway from the trailer court and directly into the path of a northbound car driven by Fred McDougal, age 59, Virden Manitoba, Canada.
The previous vehicle fatality in town took place in front of the Texas Café on Center Street when John J. Howard, age 65, of Needles, Calif., was struck and killed while crossing the street with his wife. A Wittmann owned and driven vehicle struck the man.
The passengers in the McDougall car Sunday, along with the driver, were taken to the hospital where their minor injuries were treated and they were released. They were McDougall’s wife Verda and David Reed and his wife Gertrude. All are Canadian residents.
Police said the Wertheim car was a total loss and estimated damage to the McDougall vehicle in excess of $1,500.
