John Bowen Cragg, Major (Ret), passed away peacefully on July 11, 2008 in Phoenix, AZ. Born April 17, 1918 in Gibson City, IL to Hazel and Ruben Cragg. Raised in Hoopston, IL, the family owned a small farm and the "Cragg-Cunningham Hotel" in downtown Hoopston.
John attended the University of Michigan, majoring in Hotel Administration. In 1942 he entered the Army. A summary of his military career includes graduation from Officer's Candidate School as a Second Lieutenant, Chemical Warfare Service. Detailed to the Transportation Corp. with service in England and Central Europe. Participation in the Korean Invasion at Inchon, Korea and assignment in Korkura, Japan.
In 1954 he served with the "early warning sites" in the Artic, 1956-1959 John served at Advance Second Headquarters in Verdun, France. His final assignment was Advisor to the National Army Reserve Center in Flint, MI. Awarded the American Defense Service Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany and Japan), Korean Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal.
Married in 1945 to Patricia (Weins) Cragg of Benton Harbor, MI, they had two children, Ronald S. Cragg and Marcella (Marcie) L. Cragg. The family traveled together on many of John's military assignments. Upon retiring as a Major in 1963, John and his family settled in Fenton, MI, beginning a civilian career in real estate and banking. He served as branch manager for First Federal Savings until his second retirement in 1980. Locally in Fenton, John was active in Kiwanis, served on the Oakwood Cemetery Board, and as a volunteer on the Election Committee.
John enjoyed caring for his garden and yard, which was his passion. And spending time with his wife, neighbors and friends. Known for his gentlemanly manners, kindness and generosity, he will be missed by many so very much. He was an adoring husband and father. The best in every way.
Predeceased by his beloved wife, Patricia Cragg in 2003 and son Ronald S. Cragg in 1972.
Survived by his devoted daughter Marcella L. Cragg-Gavin, son in law Patrick J. Gavin, grandson Shane Gavin and sister Virginia Kaneen.

CRAGG, Major (RET)John Bowen - Age 90, of Scottsdale, AZ formerly of Fenton, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2008 in Phoenix, AZ. A memorial service will be held 2:30 PM Friday, October 17, 2008 at Sharp Funeral Home, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Road, Fenton, with Pastor Dale Swihart officiating.
Burial immediately following at Oakwood Cemetery, Fenton. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 2:00 PM until time of service Friday.
