Today's News-Herald, Lake Havasu City, AZ - Published Tuesday, August 30, 2011 - Mittie Adeline Thornton passed away at Prestige Assisted Living Friday at age 93. She was born in Henrietta, Texas, Oct. 23, 1917, to Harry and Mary (Sacra) Tanner. Mittie and her family moved from Rocky Ford, Colo., to Pueblo, Colo., after the death of her first husband in 1948. After marrying John Thornton, they moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., where she became secretary to the principal at Cheyenne Canon Elementary School for the next 15 years. Upon moving to Lake Havasu City, she was secretary to the principal at Smoketree Elementary School from 1969 to 1972. Mittie became secretary at Havasupai Elementary School when it opened in 1972 until she retired in 1983. She remained active in her retirement, enjoying water aerobics, walking, golf and traveling. Mittie was known at Prestige for the many hours she spent working jigsaw puzzles. Mittie is survived by her two daughters, Sandra Tabor and Nancy Clark (Keith); stepchildren Challie, Johnny and MLady; granddaughter, Kristin Clark; grandson, Brent Clark; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and late husbands, James Taber and John Thornton. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
