MALOTT,
James R. (Bud), Jr.
Arizona Silver Belt, Globe, AZ
Wednesday, September 21, 2011
James R. “Bud” Malott, Jr. died peacefully on Sept. 8, 2011 at age 94.
Bud’s parents, James R. Malott, Sr. and Edith S. Malott, moved to Globe in 1915. With his partner, Samuel Morris, Bud’s father founded the firm of Morris & Malott. The firm became the primary law firm for Miami Copper Company and for successor owners of the Sleeping Beauty Mine.
A lifetime resident of Globe, Bud, or Buddy, as his friends and family knew him, was a generous, warm father, uncle, and gentleman with a wry and quiet sense of humor. An attorney with the firm of Morris & Malott since 1941, he kept many of Globe’s businesses and individuals out of legal trouble. His family and friends will greatly miss him.
Born Feb. 23, 1917, at the family home on First Street in Globe, Bud attended Globe High School, where he was an excellent student but loved most to play football. His favorite position was as a blocking fullback or halfback, where, in his own words he “loved to hit the big guys.” He graduated in 1934, and enrolled at the University of Arizona at Tucson. He transferred to Stanford University his junior year, and graduated from Stanford Law School in 1941. While at Stanford he met and married Carol Hover, with whom he eventually had his two children. He joined Morris & Malott in 1941 and practiced law until 2004.
Bud was a member of “The Greatest Generation.” He lived through the Depression as a teenager where he claimed “A big Saturday night in Globe was to bum a dime off my parents, buy a gallon of gas, and drive around watching girls and sharing a Coke.”
Bud was married with two children when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, and trained to become a B-25 bomber pilot. Because of his “passable skill and a lot of luck,” he became an instructor pilot and stayed in Texas, training pilots until the war ended. He was assigned as an attorney for the Nuremberg War Trials but because of a paperwork mix-up he was mustered out in 1945 and rejoined Morris & Malott.
Bud was a principal owner of the Copper Belt Publishing Company, which printed the Arizona Silver Belt and Arizona Record. The publishing company started by Bud’s father and others in 1920, was sold in 1986.
He was a founding member of the Globe Lions Club Chapter and received his 60-year membership pin in 2009. He was a member of the Arizona Masonic White Mountain Lodge No. 3 in Globe from 1945. He was also a member of the local Elks Lodge. In later years he traveled to Europe, Asia and South America. He loved flying his small plane to Mexico and throughout Arizona and the Southwest.
Bud was predeceased by his three older sisters, Eleanor, Margaret and Jeannette.
He is survived by two children, James Spencer Malott and Lucinda Malott, as well as five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and seven nieces and nephews, grand- and great-grand family members, many of whom still reside in Globe and other parts of Arizona.
A memorial service will be held at the Elks Lodge in Globe, Ariz., at noon on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011. Friends and family are encouraged to attend. Further information may be obtained by calling Lucinda Malott at 805-687-4363 or Jim Malott at 415-336-2650. Interment will be private.
