Kirk Scott Cookson, 58, died Thurs., Sept. 15, 2011 in Lake Havasu City, where she has lived for the last 20 years. Kirk was born in Tucson, Jan. 4, 1953. She was a 1970 graduate of Tucson High School. She attended Scripps College in Claremont, Calif., before graduating Cum Laude with her bachelor’s degree from The University of Arizona. Later she received her Law Degree from Whittier Law School in Los Angeles, graduating Magna Cum Laude.
After practicing in Los Angeles, she returned to Tucson. She was in private practice and then became an Appeals Judge in the Department of Economic Security, Unemployment Department. She then served as a Justice of the Peace, Pro Tempore, and a Tucson City Magistrate, Pro Tempore. She then became the Town Attorney in the Town of Marana, until she relocated to Lake Havasu City as the City Prosecutor. For the past 15 years, she engaged in private practice of law. Kirk was a passionate football and soccer fan, an avid reader and seamstress and loved crocheting. The last few years she was taking classes to learn other crafts, including weaving.
Kirk was a Past President of the Mohave County Bar Association, a member of the Lake Havasu Lions Club, Friends of the Lake Havasu Library and the Lake Havasu Republican Women’s Club. She was also an avid supporter of the local animal shelter.
Kirk is survived by her former husband and best friend of 30 years, James Cookson of California; her mother, Judith Williams; her father, William (Deborah) C. Scott; her three sisters: Kevyn Duran, Gillian (Clint) Bleeker and Bryan (Jack) Gordon; her two brothers: Christopher (Krysta) Scott and William C. Scott, VIII. She is also survived by five nephews: Buchanan Bleeker, Bentley Bleeker, William Scott, Griffin Scott, and Ryan Scott; two nieces: Jasmine Duran and Chelsea Duran and her beloved dog, Andre.
In memory of Kirk, hug your kids and animals, not necessarily in that order. The family will host a celebration of Kirk’s life to remember Kirk and hear your stories about her at the King Arthur Room of the London Bridge Resort from 4-6 p.m. on Sun., Sept. 25.
