Carl Hugo Lindquist was born in Duluth, Minn., on June 18,1916 to Hugo and Ingeborg (Carlson) Lindquist and passed away Sunday, Sept. 25.
As his mother died when Carl and his sister Louise were very young, they were each raised by a different aunt. Carl spoke often of the wonderful odors coming from Auntie Brander’s boardinghouse kitchen.
Carl was confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Jackson, Wyo. They said “Go west young man,” and indeed Carl did in 1936, ending up working on a ranch in Jackson. When World War II broke out, he joined the Navy and with the CBs spent more than four years in the South Pacific area. Upon discharge he returned to Jackson and opened a TV and music store just off the square.
Throughout his 20 years of ownership he brought TVs, records, juke boxes, etc., to the area. His marriage to Millie Perry created three wonderful children - Dennis, Kenneth, and Kitty. He taught square dancing, was active with the Boy Scouts when his boys were of that age and was involved with the Rotary Club, serving as its president one year. Later he built the CL Motel (now Elk Refuge Inn), and after selling it he moved to Wilson, Wyo., where he constructed his home and rentals on Teton Pass.
In 1985 he married June Swanson of Duluth, Minn., (a cousin of his cousin) and they were pleased to celebrate 25 years together last October. He was surprised and grateful to reach his 95th birthday in June of this year.
Carl was an avid reader. “We are fearfully and wonderfully made,” and he especially enjoyed reading about body and health issues. He loved off-road motorcycling, and he and his buddies covered many of the mountain trails in Wyoming and nearby Idaho and Utah.
When he became a “snowbird” in the late 1970s, he added the trails in the deserts of Arizona as well, delighting in taking beautiful pictures along the way. In 1993 Carl and June moved to Star Valley Ranch, Wyo., where they enjoyed getting re-acquainted with old Jackson friends and meeting new ones and neighbors.
Carl is survived by wife June; sons Dennis (Kay) of Las Vegas, Nev., and Kenneth (Leslie) of Jackson Wyo.; daughter Kitty (Randall) Vincent of Las Vegas, Nev.; his grand and great-grand children; sisters Louise Thorsen of Albuquerque, N.M.; Carol Jones of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; Lorraine Lindquist of Morgan Hill, Calif.; and many friends.
Peace be to his memory. Any memorials may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church of Wickenburg. His memorial service will be held at the Redeemer Lutheran Church on Rose Lane at 2 p.m. Friday (Oct. 7). Arrangements are by David’s Desert Chapel Funeral Home.
