WALTERS, David Lee

Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, Arizona September 29, 1968 Long-Term Con takes Own Life. Florence (AP) – David Lee Walters, 28, serving sentence for two Phoenix area robberies, has hanged himself in his Arizona State prison cell. Prison officials said Walter tied his belt around his neck, attached the belt to the top bunk, and fell forward. A guard on a routine check found the body. Walters had pleaded guilty to taking $1,400 from a Fry’s Food Market in Phoenix on March 1 and to taking part in the $52,000 holdup of the Carefree branch of the Valley National Bank March 28. He was given a 35 to 36 year sentence on the market robbery and a 15 years term on the federal bank robbery count. Walters and two other men, James Black, 42, and David Price McIntoch, 35, were involved in a gunfight with sheriff’s deputies north of Phoenix after the Carefree bank holdup. McIntosh was killed and Black was wounded, but Walter was captured uninjured.
