Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, Arizona October 10, 1968, page 1,2 Russell Stone, Wartime Mayor, Dies Funeral services were held at 11 o’clock Tuesday morning in the First Presbyterian Church for Russell E. Stone. The Rev. W. Howard Blazer officiated and burial followed in the Wickenburg Cemetery. Mr. Stone had been a patient in Community Hospital since mid-September. His death occurred October 2. Mr. Stone, who had lived 27 of his 87 years in Wickenburg, served the town as Councilman and Mayor during World War II and a third term after the war. He was head of the important Ration Board during the same war and played an active role in wartime bond drives and salvage efforts. He and Mrs. Stone moved to Wickenburg upon his retirement October 1, 1941 after 40 years with the Santa Fe Railway in Winslow. At the time of his retirement he was a conductor on the railroad’s crack passenger train The Chief on the Winslow Needles run, a position he had held for six years. He was born April 1, 1881 in Port Huron, Mich., and was brought to Arizona a when only four years of age. He was a lifetime member of the Winslow Elks Lodge and four 58 years he was affiliated with the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Mr. Stone is survived by his wife, Anna, and a daughter, Mrs. Clinton (Anna) Wells of Houston, Texas, also a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Arlene Stone of Phoenix, two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
