Bernie Harry Goodwin passed away peacefully Sept. 23, 2011 while under the care of the compassionate caregivers at The Serenity House.
Bernie was born on Jan. 21, 1931, in Curve, Tenn., to Harry and Thelma (Shands) Goodwin. He was employed by Standard Armament Inc., in Glendale, Calif. for 33 years as a design engineer. In 1986, Bernie and his wife, Ruth, moved to Ripley, Tenn., and in 1990, they made their home in Lake Havasu City.
Bernie proudly served in the Tennessee National Guard for six years. He was a member of The Elks Lodge for 20 years and resigned due to illness. Among Bernie’s hobbies was playing pool in the garage while listening to country music. His favorite was Willie Nelson. He also enjoyed listening to Elvis Presley. Bernie was an avid Dodger fan and went to many games and playoff games at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
Bernie is survived by loving wife of 60 years, Ruth; his daughter, Judy Blake, of Newbury Park, Calif.; his son, Richard Goodwin, of Lake Havasu City; granddaughters, Kristina Utecht, of Newbury Park, Calif.; Susan Krantzman, of Surprise, Ariz.; Summer Goodwin, of Henderson, Nev.; Katie Goodwin, of Houston, Texas; grandson, Bryan Goodwin, of Lake Havasu City; six great-grandchildren; brothers Bobby Goodwin, Lewis Goodwin and Jimmy Goodwin; sister Janie Fowler, of Torrance, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Dottie Moore and Ruby Taylor.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bernie’s name to Serenity House, 3679 Blue Colt Drive, Lake Havasu City, AZ 86406.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home. New Hope Hospice Chaplain Dwight Aalgaard will offer words of comfort and inspiration.
