PORTER, David Camp (Dave)


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ 10/18/2011 David Camp Porter, 85, of Show Low died Oct. 11, 2011, in Show Low. He was born Jan. 10, 1926, at home in Apache Creek, N.M. He was the fifth of eight children. He spent the early years of his life working on the farm and graduated from Reserve High School in 1944. Dave enlisted in the Army in April 1945, and did his basic training at Camp Walters, Texas. He wound up in southern Germany and was shipped back to the United States in 1946 and returned to the farm in New Mexico. Dave married his first wife in 1947. They were married for 13 years and had two children, Anna Marie and David C., "D." Dave was a Star Route Mail Contractor for most of his life. During his career he served on the board of directors for the National Star Route Mail Contractors Association. In 1958 he moved to Arizona, first to Globe and then to Show Low; where he met his wife of 48 years, Laura Jean Wright. His business, White Mountain Passenger Lines, continued to grow through their hard work. His third child, Michael Alan, was born in 1964. Dave became a Mason in 1972 and was Grand Master of the state of Arizona in 1990 and 1991. He loved Show Low. He went to Washington, D.C. and lobbied for the land exchange which obtained the City Park land. He served on the City Council for eight years, the last two as Mayor of Show Low. He is survived by his wife, Jeanie of Show Low; sons: David C. Porter (Patty), of Chandler; Michael Alan Porter, (Suzan) of Red Hook, NY; daughter Anna Marie Hartman (David) of Winslow; brother Melvin Porter (Patricia) of Sun City; sister,Alice Dyer (Grover) of Eagar; 11 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 17, at Calvary Baptist Church, 241 E. McNeil in Show Low. Interment and military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9907 followed at the Show Low Cemetery. Black's Show Low Mortuary handled arrangements.
