Marilee Ann Sellers of the Village of Oak Creek, AZ, passed away at home October 22, 2011 at age 64. Marilee was born in Omaha, NE on November 2, 1946 to parents Lawrence and Ida Tucker.
Marilee displayed amazing strength and courage throughout a 16 year battle with breast cancer. She graduated from Benson high school in 1964 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Marilee was a recognized leader in the field of electron microscopy, with tenures at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Creighton University and Northern Arizona University. Marilee inspired the youth to become involved in science though an outreach program at Northern Arizona University called the Ugly Bug Contest. Through this contest, elementary students learned the principles of electron microscopy by taking images of various bugs they collected. This outreach program is now nationally recognized and has expanded to several colleges and universities.
It was in Flagstaff where she met her current husband of 21 years, Jerry Sellers. They were introduced while cross country skiing and were married October 27, 1990.
Marilee was proceeded in death by her parents. Survived by her first husband, Vincent Webb of Huntsville, TX; current husband, Jerry Sellers; son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Jill Webb of Lincoln, NE; stepsons, Jerry Jr. Sellers of Prescott, AZ and Jeff Sellers of Richland, WA; brothers and sister-in-laws, Scott and Shirleen Tucker of Golden, CO, and Michael and Katy Tucker of Willis, TX; 10 grandchildren; 7 nieces and nephews; and 8 great nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will take place on November 12, 2011 at the Oak Creek Country Club in the Village of Oak Creek, Sedona, AZ at 2 PM.
