HOWE, Maurice V. (Morey)


The Daily Miner, Kingman, AZ - Published on October 9, 2011 - Maurice V. Howe, "Morey," 80, passed away at Wilson Regional Medical Center, Johnson City, N.Y., Aug. 29, 2011, following a long and difficult battle with cancer. He was born in Berkshire, N.Y., on June 1, 1931, the son of the late Ralph and Goldie (Barrows) Howe. He is predeceased by his brothers, Peter (Lynn) and Graydon, and sisters, Eleanor Gayles, Laura Fuller, Martha Lurcock, and Beatrice Fair, and his loyal dog, Sammy. He is survived by his children, James Howe of Florida, Janet Francis of Colorado, David Howe of Colorado and Tammy Howe of Florida; and his five grandchildren, Autumn, Ashley, Zachary, Dustin, and Shelby. He also had a residence in Kingman, Ariz., and was loved and respected by many. Morey joined the U.S. Navy in 1948 where he served on the aircraft carrier the USS Leyte during the Korean conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1952. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post in Owego, N.Y., and a member of the American Legion. Morey retired from IBM-Owego in 1987 as Plant Protection Manager after 30 years of dedicated service. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. Morey had a passion for life and living it to the fullest. He was a sailor through and through, and loved boating on the New York lakes - "You can take the man out of the Navy but you can't take the Navy out of the man." Morey was a tinkerer. He loved to make broken things work especially when someone said it couldn't be fixed. His other passions were building and restoring cars and boats, a master of mechanics, diesel engineer, a fan of the Washington Redskins and the Denver Broncos, guns, garage sales, watching John Wayne movies, and reading fiction and non-fiction books about the Civil War, WWII, and the Korean War. Morey possessed a humble grace, radiant smile and diligent work ethic. He was generous with his talents and was always helping others. There will be a Military Funeral Honors ceremony at 2:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
