Billie Herrick passed away Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, under the loving care of Hospice in Prescott, Ariz. She was a resident of Chino Valley, Ariz., for 10 years. She was born March 1947 in Kansas to Bill and Ruth Herrick, who moved their family to Sedona in 1956.
Billie was fortunate to grow up in the awe-inspiring beauty of the red rocks, where she gained a forever appreciation of the outdoors. She and her brother, Gail, played in the Hollywood sets left behind after the making of many well-known Westerns. Her father taught her the art of Dutch oven cooking and respect for the land while hiking, camping or simply observing the wilderness. She married David Blauert and together they raised two daughters.
She was a very involved homemaker as well as a support for her husband's emerging building business. She was also an entrepreneur, starting her first business, an antique store, in Oak Creek Canyon. Billie was a lifelong student who worked tirelessly toward the merits of a higher education in her 40s. She was a voracious reader in various subjects including psychology, philosophy, ethics, religion/spirituality, women's studies and history. She moved to Prescott in 1993. She and her daughter were founding members of N.O.A.H. (Neglected, Orphaned, Abused and Helpless Animals). Together they raised funds for nonprofit organizations that sheltered homeless creatures. She spent 10 years toward the cause but had really spent a lifetime with her caring heart and gentle nature for those who couldn't speak for themselves. She was an honorary member of Paw Prints Humane Society in Sedona for her unwavering commitment as a volunteer.
Billie could be a dreamer, yet she was very much a doer. She had an incredible imagination that fueled her creativity and expressed it through ongoing craft and art projects. Her muse was the world around her, be it gazing into her well-tended garden or indulging her love of travel to the far reaches with her best friend Joyce.
Billie was preceded in death by her father, Bill Herrick. She is survived by her mother Ruth Herrick and brother Gail Herrick, both of Sedona; her daughters Lauren Blauert of Chino Valley and Spring Devaux of Durango, Colo.; two grandchildren, Ella and Boden of Durango; nieces, nephews, dear friends; and, finally, her constant companion, Puff.
