Dr. Fred A. Shannon, father of Dr. Frederick A. Shannon of Wickenburg and one of the country's noted educators and historians, passed away Monday night at the home of his Son here. He had been in ill health for the past year and critically ill since January 12 when he was brought to his son's home here following surgery in Columbia, South Carolina
where he was, at the time, serving as visiting professor of history at the University of South Carolina.
In 1929, while he was studying for his doctor's degree in philosophy at the University of Iowa, Dr. Shannon was awarded the Pulitzer prize in History for his thesis entitled, "The Organization and Administration of the Union Army, 1861-65."
Born in Sedalia, Mo., February 12, 1893, he was educated in the schools there and in Clay City and Terre Haute, Indiana. He attended college at Eastern Indiana State Teachers College and the Iowa Teachers' college. Following his graduation, he taught history at Kansas State College, Manhattan, William University, Williams, Mass., and for many years at the University of Illinois in Champaign Urbana.
Dr. Shannon was active in many historical and educational organizations and was a past president of the Mississippi Valley Historical Association. He was widely known in Wickenburg, having visited his son here frequently.
The body was to be taken to Urbana, Ill., for graveside services and burial.
Surviving are the son here and three daughters, Mrs. Lucile Vaughan of Fairbanks, Alaska; Mrs Pat King of Champaign, Ill., and Mrs. Mary Sommer of Sepulveda, Calif. Also a brother, John R. Shannon of Tougaloo, Miss. and a sister, Miss Faith Shannon of Clinton, Ind. Also 14 grandchildren.
