ELLIOTT, Frank (Poncho) Rhoades


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ 11/08/2011 Frank "Poncho" Elliott, 88, died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, of a massive heart attack. Poncho was born in Baylor County, Texas and served in the Army 34 months in the European campaign during WWII. He was honorably discharged with four bronze stars, one bronze arrowhead, a good conduct medal and a WWII Victory medal. Prior to and after his military service he attended Hardin Simons University in Abilene. Poncho ranched much of his adult life, residing in Catron County, enjoyed the Gila wilderness with friends and family, and lived a healthy and happy life doing what he loved best. We will all miss having a cup of coffee with him, hearing yet another story, discussing the precipitation, or lack therof, and admiring a man who wasn't afraid to tackle anything. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lora Elliott; children: Eddie, Walter, Lori and David; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Gladys Ann Goldsmith of Baird, Texas. He was preceded in death by one son Rusty (in 1963 in a horse accident); and sister Billie Bob Hogan of Corpus Christi, Texas. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 25, in Quemado, N.M. with interment following the services at the Pie Town Cemetery in New Mexico.
