The Prescott Courier, Prescott, Arizona Tuesday, June 22, 1937 VERDE RESIDENT IS HURT FATALLY Joseph Leonard Jackson, 67 or 70 years of age died at 9:40 o'clock Monday night in the Phelps Dodge hospital in Jerome of numerous head and other injuries after being struck an hour of so earlier by a motor vehicle while he was walking across a street, in Cottonwood. Jackson entered the hospital in a condition of shock and never ever did recover consciousness. This afternoon in Cottonwood Justice of the Peace Frank E. Smith of Jerome was conducting an inquest. In order to assist in the proceedings, John R. Franks, deputy county attorney, went over this morning and took with him Mrs. Daisie Watkins to take a stenographic report of the testimony. A dairyman named Mongini, whose place is near Cottonwood, was reported over long distance telephone today to have been the driver of the vehicle. The informant said the driver became excited after the accident and instead of staying at the scene went home. His sons, as soon as they heard from him that there had been an accident had been an accident, hurried him back to Cottonwood and Mongini submitted to arrest by Deputy Sheriff Sherman, who charged hit and run driving. It was reported that the Mongini, who was driving the vehicle had lived in the Verde Valley for years, reared a family there, and had worked for the United Verde Copper company but now is nervous and not well Jackson was said to live in Grasshopper Flats.
