Harold Gene Boyd, known as "The Singing Policeman," passed away at his home in Prescott Valley on July 5, 2006. Harold was born in Okmulgee, Okla., on Sept. 26, 1927, the fourth of seven children born to John Wesley Boyd and Mable Hyde.
Harold moved to Prescott in 1960 and obtained a position on the Prescott Police force, retiring in 1980, with the rank of lieutenant.
Harold grew up in a musical environment; his entire life revolved around gospel music. The past forty-five years Harold has been active in the community. He hosted the weekly community sing on the courthouse plaza and the monthly Hootenanny; and he sang each Sunday morning on a KYCA radio broadcast, in many churches in the tri-city area, and in almost all the nursing homes at least once or twice a month. He was a lifetime member of the Greater Arizona County Music and Western Swing Association and was inducted into its Hall of Fame. Harold received a Lifetime Music Award in 2005.
An avid golfer, Harold loved all sports. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He was. preceded in death by a sister, Daisy Smith, and two brothers, Mose and Jack Boyd.
He is survived by Ruth, his wife of 24 years; two sisters, Dean Tipton, Velma (Bob) Rinehart of Oklahoma; brother John (Earene] Boyd of Sun City; two step - daughters, Linda Luke of Prescott and Quenna (Grady) Reed of Prescott Valley; grandchildren, Austin, Cody, Colton and Tanner Reed and Matt and Carri Luke; two great-grandchildren, Caden and Breanna Reed; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday, July 10, with service to follow at 3 p.m. at the LDS Church on Long Look Drive in Prescott Valley.
Internment will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Prescott.
The Hampton Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
