Ah! July 1, 2006, at 1:50 p.m. a gentle soul known as Sylvia Bessie Vorwerk Grose was cradled in the hands of her savior and guided by the lamb. She departed her mortal bonds and no doubt stood before her maker and all her family and friends who attested to her goodness. Rejoice Sylvia, they have awaited your return and finally the party you have been invited to is now.
Sylvia was born in Parshall, N.D., on April 19, 1923, to Ernest and Melvina (Loock) Vorwerk.
At a young age, the family moved to Detroit Lakes, Minn., to a farm with green grass and lots of wonderful trees and water. At the beginning of World War II, she, like many others, moved to California to work in the aircraft factory to aid the war efforts and keep house for her brothers.
While in California she met and married Alden Grose on April 27, 1946, in Yuma, Ariz. They made their home in Burbank, Calif., starting Grose Tile Company. In 1951, they moved the family back to Detroit Lakes to help run the Vorwerk farm after a serious injury to Ernest.
When all was well again they moved back to Hollywood, Calif.,where they lived until semi-retirement in 1970. At that time, they bought their own farm in Detroit Lakes where many happy years were spent. After Alden's death in 1988 Sylvia spent her time between the farm in summers and staying with her daughters, Sylvia in Arizona and Laura in Minneapolis.
Sylvia is survived by her children, Sylvia and Mitchell Sherban of Prescott, Ariz., Aleta (Grose) Ashley of Santa Monica, Calif., Laura and Gary Sanders of Minneapolis, Minn., Charles and Deborah Grose of Detroit Lakes, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; her sister, Viola Hamre of Blanchard, Idaho; and her brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Lorraine Vorwerk of Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Roy and Alice Vorwerk of Grapeview, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Alden; her stepson, Richard; her brother and sister-in-law Arnold and Lorraine Vorwerk; and her parents, Ernest and Melvina Vorwerk.
Services for Sylvia will be at the First Baptist Church, Detroit Lakes, Minn., on Saturday, July 8, 2006, at 11 a.m., with a luncheon following and internment at 2 p.m. at Height of Land Cemetery, Detroit Lakes, Minn. A Visitation and Prayer Service at West-Kjos Funeral Home, 900 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.
