Death claims State Pioneer
Mrs. Susan Elvira Johnson, aged 86 years, pioneer of Arizona, died at a local hospital yesterday. Mrs. Johnson was born August 14, 1856, in Parowan, Utah.
In 1876, Mrs. Johnson and her husband, the late Ben S. Johnson, were sent to Arizona by Brigham Young to help establish Mormon settlements.
The couple came into Arizona by way of the old Lee’s Ferry, going first to Moencopi, then to Taylor and on to Tempe about 10 years later. They then went to St. David in 1899 and in 1904 moved to Mesa and then to Buckeye before coming to Prescott in 1924.
Mr. Johnson died in Mesa two years ago. Both Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were very active in the work of the L.D.S. church.
Twelve children were born to the couple, six of whom survive: S. J., James H. and Benjamin F., all of Prescott; Don C., of Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Gertrude Roberts of Phoenix; Mrs. Margaret Cooper, of Nyassa, Oregon. There are 39 grandchildren, and 58 great-grandchildren, several of whom live in Prescott.
Funeral services will be held at the L.D.S. chapel on North Marina Street, Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock. President R. V. Howard will preside and the Branch choir will sing special musical numbers. It is expected that most of the surviving relatives will be her for the services, which will be followed by interment in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
The body will lie in state at the Hunter Mortuary tomorrow afternoon, when friends may call.
