STEVENS, Phyllis

Phyllis Matthews Stevens passed away January 22, 2004. Daughter of Lon and Rosa Matthews, she was born in Matthewsville, Arizona, September 27, 1917. Her husband of 29 years Victor Douglas Stevens preceded her in death as well as her brothers Boyd, Norman, Desmond, and Homer Matthews. She is survived by her beloved brother Joseph Matthews, and her six children and their spouses: Marjorie Camacho (Ardell), Floyd (Connie), Norman (JaNae), David (Laurie), Arabeth Gilliland (Gary) and Jim (Sara); 32 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren. She spent her life in service to others first as a full-time mother and later as a volunteer in the Simpson School library. She was known as Mom by many foster children whom she cared for as her own. In her later years, she volunteered at the Wesley Community Center teaching U.S. Citizenship Classes, helping in filling out paperwork for citizenship, and celebrating with each new citizen. A lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, she served in numerous capacities. A Viewing and Celebration of her Life was held on Monday, January 26, at the LDS Chapel at 18th Avenue and Earll. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 27, 2004, at the same chapel. Burial at Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery, Phoenix, AZ. Arrangements entrusted to Palm Funeral Home, 10761 W. Grand Ave., Sun City, AZ. Published in the Arizona Republic from 1/25/2004 - 1/27/2004.
