The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Thursday, December 28, 2006 J. R. Williams, 91, died Dec. 24, 2006, at Yavapai Regional Medical Center in Prescott. The son of Clarence David Williams and Martha E. "Mattie" Prichard Williams, J.R. was born Sept. 6, 1915, in Milburn, Okla. A meat cutter by trade, he moved to Tileson in 1947 and to Prescott in July 1950, where he opened J.R. Williams Super Market at 628 Miller Valley Road in December of that year. Through this business he sponsored Little League teams and a men's bowling team in the Prescott Parks and Rec. league. In Prescott, he also served terms on the Hospital District Board at the time they were constructing the building on Willow Creek Road near Whipple Street where Yavapai Regional Medical Center now stands, Prescott Board of Adjustments, and numerous offices in the First Congregational Church. He is a former member of the Yavapai County Sheriffs Posse and Jeep Posse, The Kiwanis Club of Prescott, charter member of the Mile High Kiwanis (no longer in operation), life member of Prescott Elks Lodge BPOE #330, and life member of the NRA. He also helped Bob Khune, George Paukand others form the Yavapai County Youth Center on Whipple Street, now the YMCA. His favorite pastimes were hunting and fishing, which he pursued as long as health would permit. His gun collection grew to more than 100 fine firearms, including a Winchester Model 94 rifle which has been donated to the Charles M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Mont. The museum intends to display it in a new exhibit, "Boots, Buckles and Babes," scheduled to open next summer. He is survived by his three children, Stan and wife Nikki of Prescott; Carol Stahly and husband Dave; of Helena, Mont.; and Mike; and wife Marsha of Prescott Valley; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Edith Carruth of Shawnee, Okla.; numerous nieces and nephews out of state; sister-in-law Pauline Williams of Ardmore, Okla.; sister-in-law Carol Leet of Washington state; and brother-in-law Richard A. Stanley of Alamogordo, N.M. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Kathryn, a brother, and four sisters. Memorial services are planned for 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, at Hampton Funeral Home.
