BATON, Bernice

The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Thursday, December 28, 2006 Bernice Zevin Baton passed away peacefully on Dec. 21, 2006. She was born in New York City in 1923 and moved to Cleveland, Ohio, as a child. In 1943, she left college to serve her country as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard where she became a Yeoman 2nd Class. In 1945, she was introduced to Army Captain Louis Baton on a blind date and they were married in February 1946. Bernice raised three children, and when time permitted she returned to her true passion, education. In 1965, she graduated from California State University, Northridge with a Bachelor's Degree in Education and was immediately hired by Los Angeles Unified School District. Bernice taught English and Journalism at Granada Hills High School and later transferred to John F. Kennedy High School until she retired in 1991. Since 2002, Bernice had resided in Prescott, where she remained active knitting hats for our sailors and soldiers and participating in the local book club. She had many Internet friends around the country and enjoyed playing online Scrabble with them. Bernice is survived by her husband of 60 years, Louis; daughters Joan Petty of Prescott, Ariz., and Brooke Eaton of Spokane, Wash.; and son, Richard Eaton of Santa Clarita, Ga. Funeral services are pending at this time in Los Angeles, Calif. No flowers, please. Donations in her name may be made to Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation, Inc., P.O.
