Antine Joseph "Joe" Thomas, 97, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, at his daughter's home in Kingman with family. He was born Feb. 11, 1914, to Anna Belle and Joseph Edwin Thomas in Riverton, Wyo. He was married to Angela Formaz for 69 years until her passing on March 24, 2010.
His childhood was spent in Wind River and Salt Creek, Wyo. As a young teenager, his family moved to Denver. When Joe was 17, he worked in a gold mine for $3 a day. He began prospecting for gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc in Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.
He married Angela in 1940. They spent many years in Gunnison, Colo., raising their children, where Joe worked as a welder, carpenter, heavy equipment operator and miner once again. Throughout their years in Gunnison, the couple started Thomas Trailer Court. The couple also owned and managed "Joe's Liquor Store" concurrently with the trailer court.
The Thomases moved to Kingman in 1966 where Joe was initially self-employed and eventually concluded his lifetime of vigorous work for Duval Mine before retiring in 1978. The couple also lived in their summer home in Koosharem, Utah, where Joe spent a great amount of his time fishing.
Joe was known for his great memory, sense of humor, and love of telling colorful stories about his childhood, mining experiences and family. Those who knew him were often impressed with his strong moral convictions, kindness and love of conversation. He loved the outdoors and took his family camping, hunting and fishing. His children will remember him for lovingly taking care of his mother in her last years of failing health.
Joe was an NRA member and member of Mohave Sportsman Club.
Joe is survived by his children, JoAnne (Wayne) Burns of Cheyenne, Wyo., Jack (Iva) Thomas of Spring Creek, Nev., Pat (Jim) Jordan of Camas, Wash., and Judy Walker of Kingman; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
His family will miss him dearly.
