LINGLE, Ralph Randall (Randy)


The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Thursday, October 12, 2006 Ralph Randall "Randy" Lingle, 70, passed away Oct. 10, at the VA Hospice in Prescott, Ariz., after courageously battle a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Patricia, of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; sister Sheryl Samson of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter Liz Ann Mayhill, her husband Rod, and their children Nathan, Nicholas and Kaylee, of Hilliard, Ohio; daughter, Laura Garner and her children Shannon and Troy, of Lafayette, Ind.; son Brandon Lingle, his wife Jennifer, and their children Christopher, Daniel, Carlee, Casey and lan, of San Antonio, Texas. Randy was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Ralph and Mildred Lingle; daughter, Lisa; and son, Michael. Born June 28, 1936, in Indianapolis, Randy spent the majority of his childhood in Lafayette, Ind. After graduating from West Lafayette High School in 1954, he played football for a short time at DePauw University. Randy then lived in Key West, Fla., before joining the Army where he worked in military intelligence and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. Randy returned to Lafayette to attend Purdue University, and begin his 27-year career in law enforcement. He earned his Bachelor's and Master's of Science in Education from Purdue. He began as a patrolman in 1958 and left the Purdue University Police Department as assistant superintendent twelve years later. Randy then served two years as the assistant director and seven years as director of public safety at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill. Randy moved his family west to become chief of police at the University of California at Riverside. He retired from law enforcement after three years as chief of police at the University of California at Santa Barbara where he was responsible for 120 employees and a $2.5 million budget. One of his proudest law enforcement accomplishments was his role in security planning for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic village at UCSB. In 1987, the Lingles moved to Lompoc, Calif., where Randy and Pat opened BJ's Yogurt Company. Randy often used his business to give back to the Lompoc community through donations and special events. He also gave much of his time by volunteering through: Queen of Angels Catholic Church where he was an active parishioner, Lompoc Elks #2274, where he was a life member; and finally as an Air Force Academy Liaison officer. His efforts helped 10 young men and women earn direct appointments to the Academy and another six earn AFROTC scholarships. He was especially proud of being recognized by the Air Force Recruiting Service for his outstanding support of Air Force recruiting. An avid athlete and sports fan all his life, Randy ran half-marathons and lifted weights for many years. He continued working out and running despite the difficulties of his illness. He was a strong supporter of Lompoc youth sports and school athletic programs. Being a true Hoosier, Randy loved the Indianapolis 500. He attended the race nearly 40 times, with more than 30 of those consecutively.
