Timothy J. Chapman, age 60, former resident of Kingman and prominent local businessman there during the 1970s and '80s, when he was co-owner with wife Diana of Chapman's Country Corner, passed away
at Hospice of the Valley in Goodyear on Monday, Dec. 4, 2006, following a brief battle with cancer.
Tim was born July 19, 1946, in Los Angeles, California, to the late Drs. James C. and Katheryne W. Chapman, and lived nearly all of his life in Arizona.
He graduated from Arizona State University in 1967 and married Diana Patricia Beasley that same year. For a few years thereafter, they lived on and helped operate his parents' cattle ranch near Prescott. In 1971, Tim and Diana and children Brent, born 1968, and Jody, born 1970, moved from the ranch to Kingman in order to open Chapman Feed and Supply. The business prospered, expanded to include western wear, and was renamed Chapman's Country Corner when it relocated to 4250 Stockton Hill Road in the late '70s.
In the late '80s, Tim and Diana sold the business and relocated back to Prescott, and later to Glendale, where Tim pursued a variety of businesses, most recently as a residential real estate agent working with Desert State Realty in Glendale.
Tim and Diana were divorced in 2003, but remained good friends.
Throughout the 1970s and '80s in Kingman, Tim was active in community service. As a prominent local businessman, he often donated his time and energy to support youth groups including 4-H and the Future Farmers of America (FFA), as well as professional associations such as the state and local Cattlegrowers' Associations, the Chamber of Commerce and various business groups.
A licensed pilot, he flew with the Mohave County Sheriff's Air Search and Rescue Posse, a group he helped form. For several years, he served on the Mohave County Airport Board. He was a member of the Mohave County Sheriff's Mounted Posse and helped organize their annual rodeo for several years. He was a championship horseman in college, competing in cutting and calf roping events throughout the Southwest.
As an adult, he continued to participate actively in the local family team roping community, frequently spending weekends with his family traveling to events throughout the state to rope with both his extended family and many friends.
Tim is survived by his son, Brent Chapman, of San Francisco, Calif.; his daughter, Jody Bartling, and her husband Rob and their daughter (Tim's granddaughter) Cameron of Chino Valley, Ariz.; his sister, Susan Chapman, of Prescott, Ariz.; and his former wife, Diana Chapman, of Chino Valley, Ariz.
According to Tim's request, no public memorial services are planned and his ashes will be scattered across his family's former cattle ranch, northwest of Prescott, in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in his name to be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, Ariz., 85014-5656, who greatly comforted both Tim and his family in his last days.
