Marvin "Kirk" Fleming, age 81, of Austin, Texas, and formerly of Prescott Valley, Arizona, died November 27, 2006, at St. David's North Austin Medical Center, where he received loving care from everyone there. He was born in Los Angeles, Calif., in 1925.
He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943 and fought in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was honored to receive the Purple Heart for injuries incurred there. He served in the Korean War and in Vietnam. When he retired in 1973 he joined the American Red Cross and returned to Vietnam as a Red Cross representative.
He loved traveling and moved many times with the ARC. He and his family lived in Yuma, Ariz., Fairbanks, Alaska, Ansbach, Germany, Lemoore, Calif., and Denver, Colo.
Following his second retirement, he and his wife moved to Prescott Valley, Ariz., to be near his children. Here he became active in the Masons again having been initiated in 1952 at Potomac Lodge #5 EAAH Washington, D.C. He was an active volunteer with the Yavapai Sheriff's Department and the Prescott Valley Police Department. He loved his work with these brave men and women.
Kirk is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Ruth Fleming, of Austin; his son Kirk Fleming, Jr. and wife Shelley and their children, Saytor and Skyier, of Atlanta, Ga.; his daughter, Leslie Cote and her children Kevin, Eric and Joshua of Cadillac, Mich.; and his daughter Robin Hibberd and husband Doug and their children Gavin and Lindsay of Austin, Texas.
Kirk was a faithful Marine all his life, "Once a Marine, always a Marine." He was an ardent supporter of all the American Service Men and Women, active and retired.
Kirk will be buried with full military honors at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Kirk's name to the VFW or the American Red Cross.
