Herald and News (Klamath Falls, OR) Saturday, November 5, 2011 Rose Myrtle Cross-Sammis, 87, passed away on Nov 3, 2011, at Pelican Point Memory Care Facility in Klamath Falls. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov 7, 2011, at the Dorris Community Center at 3pm. Private family interment will be held at Picard Cemetery in Dorris. "Rosie" as she liked to be called, lived a full life. She was born and raised on a ranch (Sheep Creek) outside of Dorris on Oct 23, 1924, to Charles Elliot and Stella Lucinda (McKay) Cross. She was the fourth of five children. Her siblings are Ruby Cross-Johnson, Clarence Cross, Vernon Cross and Lora Cross-Truax, who is the only living sibling. Rosie graduated from Butte Valley High School in 1943. She leaves behind four of her five children and their spouses: William Stevenson and his wife Candy of Wickenburg, Ariz., Joseph Sammis and his wife Michele of Dorris, Calif., Betty Sammis of Dorris, and Lori Hurt and her husband Jerry of Mt Shasta, Calif., Gray Sammis passed away earlier this year; grandchildren Billy Stevenson, Becky Smith and her husband Ron of Dorris, and Ky Sammis of Grants Pass, Ore.; four great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Rosie loved to do arts and crafts and she was very meticulous about her work. She could do embroidery, crochet, needlepoint, sew, quilt, cross stitch, and it was all beautiful. She enjoyed working in her flower garden and loved to dance. She loved her family very much and enjoyed having them all gather at her home so she could cook and make delicious pies for them all to enjoy. She enjoyed playing pinochle and was a member of the WIST club. She was also a member of the Baptist Church. Rosie was a rancher's wife and worked hard in the fields and enjoyed working with cattle as well as in the home preparing meals and caring for her family. She worked in the potatoes for Bob Cheney for several years. She worked at the Butte Valley High School for many years taking the tickets at the football, basketball and volleyball games. She served on the election board for fifteen years. Rosie, or "Grandma Rosie" as she was called by many, was chosen for the Grand Marshal in 2006 for the Christmas Festival Parade in Dorris. She was given many awards by the school for her years of dedication taking tickets at the games and for so many other things she did for the school. Rosie was an active member of the Dorris Grange 393 for years. She joined when she was fourteen years old and held many offices. In 1989, she received a 50-year national certificate and, in 1997, received a 55-year seal for continuous membership at the Grange. She also received a certificate in 1991 honoring her for 50 years of membership in the Pomona Grange and at that time she held the office of Lady Assistant Steward, Steward of Pomona Grand, and was assistant chairman of GWA.
