Robert Barrett, born November 7, 1929 in Polk City, IA died January 1, 2011 in Phoenix, AZ. He was 82 years old.
Bob graduated from Sheldahl, IA High School in 1947. He attended college, but before completing, left to join the USMC. He trained at Camp Pendleton and deployed with the 1st Marine Division to Korea, July 3, 1951. On September 11 he was seriously wounded in the battle of Heartbreak Ridge, where his platoon sustained 100% casualties. Bob's injuries left him a paraplegic.
On November 14, 1953, Bob married Miriam Grundberg. In July, 1962 they welcomed a son, Jonathan. Bob continued his education, completing PH.D. coursework at the University of Iowa. He served one year as Dean of Men at Trinity University in Deerfield, IL, then spent the rest of his career counseling veterans with drug and alcohol addictions.
Bob is survived by his son, Jon (Karen) Barrett; his grandchildren, Robert and Kimberly Barrett; and his siblings, Ailene Mally and Dale Barrett. He is preceded in death by his wife, Miriam; his parents, Milo and Lola (Sutter) Barrett; and his brother, Lionel.
