RUDY HERE At One Time Largest Cattleman in Territory, William Rudy Devoted His Entire Career Here to That Business William Rudy, one of Arizona's oldest pioneers, who died at his Kirkland home Friday morning after a brief illness, was born in West Virginia 88 years ago. He lost both his parents at the age of four and was raised as an orphan. When only a young fellow he came west in, 52, attracted by the gold strike in California. In 1868 he married Miss Hester A. Stewart. The year later, he returned to the east where he entered the sawmill business. He returned west in 1876 across the plains in an ox team train which required months for the trip. There were several scuffles with the Indians. Mr. Rudy and his family settled in what is now known as Ferguson valley and with only a few head of cattle began building up his cattle business. At one time he was one of the territory's largest cattle owners. A few years ago he sold out his entire holdings which ran under the 22 brand. At one time Mr. Rudy was prominent in I.O.O.F. work but later he retired. His religion was summed up in the words; Benevolence, truth and good will. Those surviving are Mrs. Rudy, aged 83, two daughters Mrs. Grant Carter and Mrs. Charles W. Carter of Kirkland, and two sons, Albert S. Rudy of Kirkland and Joseph E. Rudy of Yucca. All were at the bedside when death occurred.
