Pioneer School Teacher Drops Dead On His Way To Teach; John Piper Is Dead
John N. Piper, 69 years old, left his home yesterday morning to walk to the little accommodation school which he taught at Sycamore, near Drake. On the road he exchanged "good mornings" with several friends. He walked half a dozen steps after having spoken to a man of his acquaintance and dropped dead.
The death of Mr. Piper came as a shock although it was known he had been suffering from heart trouble. Many friends in Yavapai county and especially in Prescott, were thrown into mourning by the news which quickly came to town.
The body was brought in yesterday afternoon and funeral arrangements will be made today.
Mr. Piper was born 69 years ago the sixth day of this month in Nevada county, California. He came to Prescott in 1882. He served as assistant postmaster for many years under Postmasters A. L. Smith and A.J. Herndon. All the other time he taught school.
The deceased is survived by his widow, two sons and a daughter. The sons are Bruce and Marvin Piper and the daughter Mrs. Francis Watkins of Buckeye.
