Springerville - Round Valley has lost one of its beloved and progressive citizens and the passing of Davis Beauregard Rudd.
‘Uncle Dave’ as he was lovingly called by many, was injured Saturday afternoon, December 15, in an automobile accident and was taken to Albuquerque, N. M. by his nephew, William Williams at which place he died Sunday morning at 9:30.
Mr. Rudd was born September 3, 1861, in Lafayette Ark., son of Dr. William M. and Elizabeth Catherine Rudd, came to Round Valley with his parents when he was 15 years old. He lived for several years on a ranch on Rudd Creek, known as the old McKay ranch. He followed the range for many years and also was a Ranger for several years serving on Apache said Sitgraves national forest.
He accidentally shot himself in the side while on Ranger duty and was forced to resign that position owing to ill health thereafter. He then moved to Wickenburg where he was in business for a time, moving back to Springerville in 1915, where he had been operating a meat market associated with his nephew, William Williams.
Three qualities, determination, honesty, and sound judgment stood out to the unusual degree and Mr. Rudd's character. He was a true Christian and activity member of the Presbyterian Church.
He endured many hardships during the time that Arizona was battling with hostile Indians, and was called upon to protect his loved ones many times.
He never married and leaves to mourn his passing three brothers and four sisters, they are Alex Rudd of Glendale, Olney Rudd of Fresno, Calif., William Rudd, of Winslow, Mrs. Virginia Williams, Mrs. Nanny Murray, Miss Ida May Rudd, of Springerville, and Mrs. Quincy Randles of Albuquerque, N.M., all of whom were present at funeral services which were held in the community church at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Rev. W. A. Gill was reading the services.
Mrs. W. C. Ellis arranged the singing. Friends with whom Mr. Rudd had been associated during his life were chosen as pallbearers. They were Gustave Becker, Harris Miller, Sylvester Hulsey, Joe Baca, J. W. Robinson and J. W. Becker active, S. B. Booth, Aversto Silva, P. E. Udall, Melvin Brown, Cleve Wiltbank and Clem Saffell.
The floral offerings from friends and relatives were beautiful.
