SMITH, Windell Preston


Windell Preston Smith, age 78, of Mesa and Lakeside, Arizona, passed suddenly from this life on February 4, 2004. He was born April 14, 1925, in Munday, TX, the oldest son of Claud and Ola Smith, and moved with his family to Arizona shortly thereafter. A kind and gentle man, an avid golfer and Diamondback fan, he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Windell is survived by his wife, Jean; his daughters Terry Koehler of Delta, CO and her husband Dave, and Patty Peery of Bedford, TX; by his son Mark Smith of Gilbert, AZ and his wife Bonnie; by his grandsons Michael and Sam Peery of Bedford, TX, and a great grandson, Harley Peery of Bedford, TX. He is also survived by two brothers; James Smith of Globe, AZ and his wife Betty, and Richard Smith of Glendale, AZ. Windell graduated from Miami High School, Miami, AZ and served with the First Marine Corps Air Wing in the South Pacific during WWII. A memorial service was held Monday, February 9, 2004 at Mountain View Memorial Gardens Mortuary Chapel, 7900 E. Main, Mesa, AZ. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to your favorite charity in Windell's memory. Published in the Arizona Republic on 2/8/2004.
