Arizona Founder Weinberger Dies
San Diego - Jacob Weinberger, one of the nation's oldest judges and the last surviving founder of the state of Arizona, is dead at 92.
Weinberger died at his home Monday, only three days after he took his final action as a federal judge, signing the last of some 20,000 immigration papers.
A native of Czechoslovakia, he was a 28-year-old lawyer in 1910 when he and other delegates met in Phoenix to draft a constitution for Arizona, which became the 48th state in 1912.
Weinberger came to San Diego in 1911. He served 21 years on the school board and later briefly as city attorney. Long active in Democratic politics, he ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 1939.
He was named a federal judge by President Harry Truman in 1946, and three years later was moved to San Diego to become the city's first resident federal judge.
He ceased full-time practice in 1958 but remained active as a senior judge, performing naturalization ceremonies and doing administrative work.
Weinberger is survived by two children. The funeral is scheduled Wednesday.
