Prior to the Civil War they owned and operated a prosperous plantation at Maumelle, Arkansas, in the area now a part of North Little Rock. They were forced to abandon their holdings and seek refuge in Texas on the Brazos River. On their return to Arkansas when hostilities ceased, they found the plantation in burned-out ruins, so they decided to move to Prescott, Arizona Territory.
The Shanberger's lived at 225 North Montezuma Street the rest of their lives. Only two of Elizabeth's four sons reached manhood. George died as a recruit in the Confederate Army when he contracted measles on the march to Memphis, Arkansas, for training when he was 18. Barrington) born 9 Feb, 1849 , Catharine Sarah (Mrs. Dan Hatz) born 23 March 1852 ,Margarette ( Mrs. James Anderson Vance) born 20 Jan 1854 . One of her granddaughters, Mary Elizabeth Barrington (Mrs. Benjamin Franklin Major) was named after her.
Elizabeth brought with her to Prescott starters of the yellow rose which flourished here and clippings were given to many residents. Today it grows as a hedge in front of the Bashford House on the campus of the Sharlot Hall Museum and in the Citizen's Cemetery. She was an active member of the Methodist Church. Elizabeth was a true pioneer, aided in the establishment of one of the early churches. She died on 18 January 1895 in Prescott and is buried in Citizen's Cemetery.
