H. D. Phelps, Miner Dies
A former mining engineer in Yavapai County and Tucson city councilman, Harlow D. Phelps, 89 died March 30 in a Tucson nursing home.
He married the former Maybelle Sheldon of Prescott in 1923.
Mr. Phelps is survived by a son, Sheldon.
He was born in Denver and moved to Jerome in 1915 where he was employed by a mining company for environmental research on smoke from the smelter causing damage to crops in the nearby Verde Valley. In 1921, he opened an engineering office in Prescott. He joined the U.S. Bureau of Mines during World War II, before moving to Tucson where he established a mine engineering office.
Services were conducted April 2 at Grace Episcopal Church in Tucson.
