Major Harvey B. Apperson, Jr., of Tucson, Ariz., son of the late Harvey B. Apperson, Attorney General of Virginia and Louise Logan Apperson, departed this life on Monday, March 13, 2000. Apperson was born in Salem, Va. on May 2, 1921.
He attended schools in Salem until entering active military service with the Virginia National Guard in 1940. Apperson was commissioned a Second Lieutenant upon completing Aviation Cadet training in 1943. He qualified as pilot in command over forty different types of aircraft in the Ferrying Command and served two combat tours flying "The Hump" over the Himalayan Mountains between India and China. After WWII, he was one of the first pilots to help establish the Montana Air National Guard at Gore Field, Great Falls, Montana. Upon recall to active duty, he served overseas in Greenland and England as a pilot and administrative officer. Upon retirement from the United States Air Force in 1963, he became an entrepreneur in California, later moving to Montana as an oil producer and real estate property manager.
Upon retirement, he moved to Tucson, Arizona with Mariana McNair of Great Falls, Montana, his wife of 54 years.
Apperson was a charter member of The Penguin Club in Salem, Va. and the York Rite and Shrine Masonic organizations.
He is survived by his wife, Mariana McNair; three granddaughters; his son, Harvey of Denver, Colorado; and daughter, Diana of Prescott, Ariz.
Brief memorial services will be held at the family home on March 17, 2000 at 2 p.m. in Tucson, Ariz.
His cremated remains will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery, where a brief military graveside ceremony will be performed.
