Dorothy Stanley passed away in Flagstaff, Arizona on December 22, 2011. She was 87. Dorothy was born January 29, 1924 in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. She grew up in Normal, Illinois. She moved to Ontario, California in 1957 where she continued to live most of her life. Dorothy moved to Flagstaff, Arizona in 2006.
She resided at the Peaks Senior Living Community where she enjoyed living independently with the thoughtful attendance of the staff. Dorothy was a bright and creative person. She received a Bachelor of Art in Education from Illinois State Normal University in 1945, and a Master of Art from Northern Arizona University in 1973. During her college career in Normal, she received several awards for her artwork including a scholarship to the Chicago Art Institute.
Dorothy started teaching elementary school immediately upon graduating from college. She retired from the Upland California School District. Married to Lofton Ezell Stanley in May of 1948, Dorothy and Lofton raised three children. Dorothy was also a grandmother of four, and a great grandmother of five.Dorothy loved to travel, garden, antique, and shop for jewelry.
The daughter of a music professor, she loved classical music and played the violin and piano. She was a proud member of PEO. She joined PEO in Bloomington, Illinois in 1946. In 1960 she was instrumental in starting the PEO Chapter QU in Ontario, California.
She remained a lifetime member of Chapter QU. Dorothy is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Robert Robb; her son and his family, John, Jayne, and Allie Stanley, Michelle (Stanley) and Jonathan Reardon; her grandchildren Janae Lewis and Danielle Angulo; and five great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband Lofton Stanley, daughter Sherri Walker, and brother Donald Sherrard.
The viewing will be 1:00 PM Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Norvel Owens Mortuary. Gravesite services are at 2:00 immediately after the viewing.
