RUPKEY, Andrew Miles


The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona Friday, July 18, 2003 Andrew Miles Rupkey, died July 15, 2003. Pioneer Arizona family: Honored graduate of the University of Arizona. Born the third son of Robert Lee Rupkey and Katie Ayers Rupkey on July 11, 1907 in San Carlos, Arizona Territory. He was a 1929 graduate of University of Arizona with distinction, receiving both the Freeman Medal for outstanding male member of his class and the Powell Saber for outstanding ROTC graduate. Andy was proud that he lettered In polo, was vice president of his senior class and a member of Phi Gamma Delta, social fraternity. Having moved to the East Coast to work for the Bethlehem Steel Company, he married Alice R. Lewis in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in 1936 and together they raised four daughters. He retired as Manager of Personnel of the corporation in 1966 and received an award from the American Iron and Steel institute the same year. He and Alice returned to Arizona where he served on the University of Arizona Alumni Board of Directors from 1970 to 1980. He was chosen an Honorary Bobcat in 1973 and Distinguished Citizen in 1978. Andy was also an active supporter of the Tucson High School Badgers, being a Golden Oldie of his 1925 class. He was a life member of the Masons (32°) and a member of the Sabbar Shrine Temple, and was awarded the Masons' 50 year of Service to the Craft in 2001. Andy was preceded in death by his wife, Alice in 1985, and by his brothers, Robert H., Welford C., and Harold L. "Dutch" and his sisters, Ann R. Davis and Winona R. Taylor Barter. His loyalty to family and friends, his integrity, his concern for each individual with whom he had dealings and his quiet good humor will be dearly missed by his daughters, Katherine Rupkey Simpson (Robert T.) of Pennsylvania, Elizabeth Rupkey Lueders Ney, of New Jersey, Bridwell Rupkey Williams of Tucson and Ruth Rupkey Bell of California, nine grandchildren and eight great-grand- children, sisters-in-law, Ann Lions and Grace Colgrove Rupkey, many nieces and nephews and special friends, Andy was most appreciative of all the care and support he received over the years, most recently the people of Catalina-in-Home Services and the Atria Campana del Rio. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2003 at 3:00 P.M. at the Atria Campana del Rio, 1550 E. River Rd.
