SHAW, Lillie King


The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona Friday, July 18, 2003 Lillie King Shaw, age 87, passed away July 15, 2003. She was the youngest of four children, born in Indianapolis, IN to a newly widowed mother. Lillie graduated from Butler University and received music training at the Jordan Conservatory of Music, also in Indianapolis, where she had her own radio show on WIBC. Her pursuit of music in Arizona included solo appearances with the Phoenix Symphony and ASU's Choral and Opera Departments. For many years she was the director and soloist for Temple Beth Israel and soloist for First Church of Christ Scientist. Her soloing for Christian worship included Baptist, Congregational, Disciples, Methodist, and Friends (Quaker) denominations. She taught English at Glendale High School for 20 years, and earned MA degrees in English & Library Science. She has donated her time and talents to the Phoenix Symphony Guild, Phoenix Orpheus Male Chorus Women's Auxiliary, Auditions Guild of Central Arizona, and the Phoenix Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, (a national music fraternity for women.) She was married to Philip H. Shaw, also a musician and teacher, who preceded her in 1985. She is survived by 9 nieces and nephews, plus two more generations. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2003 at 10:00 A.M. at Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services-Sunnyslope Chapel, 614 E. Townley Avenue, Phoenix, AZ.
