The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ October 16, 1959, p. 8 Rites Pending For Charles Matthews Who Died Tuesday Funeral services are pending for Charles O. Matthews, prominent Congress resident who died in Good Samaritan Hospital, Phoenix Tuesday night. Cause of death was cancer. Mr Mathews had lived in the Congress area more than 40 years and was well known and respected throughout this part of the state. He was believed to be about 81 years old. An Easterner by birth, Mr Matthews first came to Congress to visit his late uncle, Dick Bullard, who ran a grocery store there. Then he lived in Pueblo, Colo., for a while where he worked in an iron foundry. Returning to Congress he worked in the Bullard Grocery. When that store was closed, he lived for a while California. Then he returned to Congress and remained there. Since the death of his uncle, he had managed the Bullard estate which included land, mining properties and house rentals. Most famous of the mining properties is the Bullard Mine near Aguila. Mr. Matthews is survived by the widow, Mrs Eunice Berry Matthews of Congress. They had no children. As The SUN went to press the family was awaiting the arrival of relatives before deciding upon the time and place of funeral services and burial.
