EWIN, Dorothy Lucille

The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona Tuesday, July 22, 2003 Dorothy Lucille Ewin, 91, of Scottsdale, Az., passed away July 20, 2003 and will be forever missed. She was born in Reno, IL., to Ezra and Bessie Carlock on Sept. 3, 1911. Lucille graduated from Hillsbouro High School shortly before moving to Arizona in 1930 where she met the love of her life, Oscar Ewin. They married in Gallop, New Mexico on February 29, 1948 and spent 55 loving years together. Lucille had a full and unique life, one of her earliest careers was a singer on the radio station KOY, where she and her sister, the late Willma Johnson, were known as the Sunshine sisters. She also sang in various valley night clubs. After moving to Prescott in 1952, she became a real estate broker and land developer. She and her late husband, Oscar, were responsible for much of Prescott's early expansion. Prescott is where they made the first of many homes for their three children. Wanderlust filled their boots and they also made homes in La Jolla California, Wickenburg, Scottsdale, Cave Creek, Payson, Apache Junction and again in Scottsdale. Always politically involved, Lucille was a state officer of the Arizona Democratic party and became the National Democratic Party Chairwoman during the early 60's. She was also a reporter and editor for several local newspapers. Lucille was a proud member of the General George Crook Chapter of the DAR and past member of Sweet Adelines. Having a flair for the dramatic, Lucille was a script writer, director and actress for several little theater groups including the one in Cave Creek and the Starlite Players in Payson. In her early 80's she attended acting and theater production classes at ASU. Lucille is survived by three children, Christie Nico of MI, Roberta Ewin and Craig Ewin both of AZ. and four grandchildren, Tara and Carla Nico and Josh Ewin and Jason Ware. Visitation will be held 5-8 PM, Wednesday July 23rd and a Funeral Service, 10:00 AM, Thursday July 24th at Messinger Mortuary Chapel, 7601 E. Indian School Rd., Scottsdale.
