HAVEN, James Allen


The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona Wednesday, July 23, 2003 James Allen Haven, age 81, died Monday, July 21, 2003, at - the Flagstaff Medical Center. He was born on June 30, 1922 in Amberg, Wisconsin, son of James and Lois Ethington Haven. Jim served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a radio operator aboard the USS RICHEY where he earned a Bronze Star, a Good Conduct Medal, a WWII Victory Medal and a Purple Heart. Jim joined the U.S. Army and was assigned to investigate Colleen Louise Thorne for security clearance and the investigation resulted in their marriage on March 15, 1952. While they were both serving at 5th Army Headquarters, Chicago, they had high level secret clearances in Cryptography. Jim was an encoder and Colleen was a decoder. They were the only married couple in the U.S. Army at that time who had the above security clearances. Colleen passed away August 10, 1988. When Jim retired from the military, he worked QA for Motorola until 1986. Later, Jim married Eleanor Carley, who preceded him in death. His military travels took him worldwide and he traveled throughout the USA with his family, ultimately residing with them in AZ. He was a member of the the First United Presbyterian Church. His hobbies and interests included fishing, camping, pinochle and cribbage, reading and puzzles. He was a reserved man with a very dry and witty sense of humor. He is survived by two sons Timothy and Mark (Hawkeye) Haven, two daughters Kathleen Steen and Patricia Velsor. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, one brother Morris and three sisters Faye, Charlotte and Everal. Graveside services will be held Friday, July 25, 2003 at 9 a.m. at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd, Phoenix. A memorial service will also be held Friday at 7 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, 6440 W. Indian School Rd., Phoenix. Donations may be made in his name to the Alzheimer's Assn. - Northern AZ Region, 255 Grove Ave., Suite B, Prescott, AZ 86301. Arrangements are being handled by Flagstaff Mortuary.
