Karen Brooks
(September 14, 1966 - December 15, 2011)
Karen Lorene Brooks was born on September 14, 1966, the fourth of five children and the only girl born to the union of Clarence and Orene Brooks. Karen was baptized at the tender age of twelve under the leadership of Reverend George Smith, where she united with the First Missionary Baptist Church.
Karen graduated from Coconino Hugh School, where she participated in track and field and volleyball. She set a state record with the shot put.
Karen furthered her education by attending school for merchandising and medical records. She was employed by St Joseph Hospital and Medical center as an administrative assistant.
Her God given gift and passion for singing began to emerge with the Red Circle and Sunshine Band. Her singing ability continued to blossom in the First Missionary Baptist Church Youth Choir, Coconino High School Choir, and the many events in which she was called to sing.
After leaving Flagstaff, Arizona she continued to sing. She sang with the “Much Love” group. She was a praise team leader for Berean, Progressive, Canaan and New Jerusalem churches.
Though tall in stature and often misunderstood, she was truly a “child of God”. Karen used her voice to minister to those who crossed path with her. She ministered not only through song, but through the word and encouragement.
Family and friends will miss her. She had often said “When you miss me, I will be singing in the heavenly choir, with King David the musician and King Jesus the composer and conductor.”
She was preceded in death by her brother Henry W. Brooks.
Precious memories will forever live in the hearts of her daughter Zaria Cheatham, parents, Clarence and Orene Brooks, brothers, Clarence, Jr. of Flagstaff, AZ Darrean (Shon) of Maricopa, AZ, Gregory (Crystal) of Las Vegas, NV, six nieces, one nephew, four great-nieces, two great-nephews, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
