West Valley View, Avondale, Arizona January 06, 2012 Hortencia Carranza Luna, 79, of Avondale died Dec. 30, 2011, at West Valley Hospital in Goodyear of cardiac arrest. Mrs. Luna was born Oct. 10, 1932, in Potrero de la Mula, Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico, to Refugio Carranza and Clemencia Robles. She moved to Texas in 1946, where she hand-picked cotton and performed other agricultural labor. She moved to Arizona in 1955 and eventually settled in the Avondale community of Cashion, where she lived for more than 50 years. She was a former member of the United Farm Workers union. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose. She is survived by five daughters; one son; 19 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Eugenio and Refugio; and two sisters, Esther and Yolanda, all of Avondale. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. William's Catholic Church, 11025 W. Third St. in Avondale, with burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 10045 W. Thomas Road in Avondale.
