The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona Tuesday, July 29, 2003 Marjorie Upshaw Akers 1924-2003. Marjorie Akers was born in Indiana in 1924 and moved to Arizona with her parents in the summer of 1943. During WWII Marjorie worked in one of the Arizona factories supporting the war effort, and she proudly described herself as an Arizona "Rosie the Riveter". Marjorie met her husband, Cliff Akers, while Cliff was home on a furlough, and married when Cliff returned from the war in 1946. During the years that followed she cared for her family, attended college and was active in the church. Marjorie is survived by her husband Clifford Akers, her son Harold Akers (Arlene), her daughter Roxie Covey (David Johnson), 3 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and 4 brothers, Vert, Bus (Margaurette), Don (Pete), and Ike (Helen) Upshaw. Funeral services will be a small family gathering at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hospice of the Valley who did a wonderful job taking care of Marjorie in her final months (1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014).
