Rosalie Rothmeier Higgs died in Prescott, Ariz., on Jan. 2, 2012. She was born Jan. 19, 1913, in Holtville, Calif., to Frederick and Mignon Zschokelt Rothmeier.
The family eventually settled in Gardena, Calif., where Fred opened a barbershop. Rosalie graduated from Gardena High School and went to work at the Los Angeles Public Library. Every day she rode the streetcar to work from Gardena to downtown Los Angeles. The best part of her daily commute was that she met William Wallace Higgs. They married in 1933. They made their home in the Palms area of Los Angeles.
Rosalie, Wallace and their three children became active members of Maynard Memorial Methodist Church. When the children were older, Rosalie returned to the work force, first with the Southern California-Arizona Conference of the Methodist Church and later in the Physics, Engineering and Library Science libraries at UCLA. After retirement, she and Wallace moved to Long Beach, Calif. They became active members of Los Altos United Methodist Church. They actively supported Bread for the World and the South Coast Ecumenical Council's Interfaith Action for Aging ministry.
In 1999, Rosalie moved to Arizona, where she lived with her son Michael and his family until her death.
Rosalie was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick and Mignon Rothmeier; husband William Wallace Higgs; their daughter Susan Elizabeth Higgs Cook; and her brother Arnold Rothmeier. She is survived by her sisters May Porter of Redding, Calif., and Fern Vales of Huntington Beach, Calif.; her son Michael (Dianna) of Chino Valley; and daughter Kathy Bunch (Mike) of Apache Junction; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, at Chino Valley United Methodist Church, 735 E. Road 1 South, Chino Valley, Ariz. The family suggests contributions to Bread for the World, 425 3rd Street SW, Suite 1200 Washington, DC 20024.
