Junior Dennis
Junior Dennis Hayes passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2011 in Yuma Regional Medical Center. He was born J. E. Junior Hayes on May 5, 1925 in Cherokee, Oklahoma to Jacob Eller and Myrtle Olive (Carder) Hayes.
Junior had one sister Dortha Hayes (Powell) and three brothers Carl L Hayes, Howard Hayes and William (Bill) D. Hayes. One step-brother Edgar Hayes. When his parents divorced his mother moved North, living in Columbus, Montana with cousins a while then moving on to Skagit Valley in Washington State, where she changed Junior's name.
As a young man he had many different jobs. Working as a paper boy for the Skagit Valley Herald in Mount Vernon, Chicken Factory on Fir Street in Mount Vernon, Everett Plywood and Door in Everett. Then in 1969 he bought Lincoln Grocery Store in Mount Vernon. Working there to retirement age then moving to Yuma, Arizona.
In October 1943 he joined the Army and was in Battery B 276th Armored Field Artillary Battalion. Junior was a gun loader and helped in moving gun emplacing. He served in the European Campaign.
Being discharged in December 1945, he married Nellie P Tanis on September 9, 1946 in Skagit County and had two children. Junior was an active member in the Mount Vernon Elks Lodge # 1604. While living in Skagit Valley he loved to hunt and fish in the Puget Sound area. During his retirement years he spent winters in Yuma, Arizona going out on desert trips with friends four wheeling.
Surviving are his daughter, Sandra (John) Hogsett of Mount Vernon; son, Dennis (Sun Hee) of Everson,Washington, as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
Preceding him in death were his parents; step-brother, Edgar; sister, Dortha Powell; brothers, Carl, Howard and William Hayes. His wife Nellie Hayes, grandchild Martin Crapson and son in law Emery Crapson.
Junior was cremated. A gathering of friends and family will be held on January 11, 2012 from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. at 13238 E 51st Place, Yuma.
