Stephen Michael Schumack, M.D., retired Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon, passed away Wednesday, December 28th, 2011, in Bakersfield, California, after spending a wonderful Christmas with his family in San Jose, CA.
The eldest of nine children, he was born May 8, 1940, to Stephen F. & Bernice Schumack, in Chicago, Illinois.
A 1958 graduate of St. Patrick High School in Chicago, Illinois, he earned a bachelor of science degree in Chemistry from St. Norbert College in DePere, Wisconsin in 1962. Dr. Schumack attended Loyola University's Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois, graduating in 1966. He completed an internship and residency at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. His residency program was interrupted during the Vietnam War. He served 1968 to 1970 as a Captain, returning to Phoenix to complete his orthopedic residency in 1973.
Dr. Schumack served on the Medical Staff of Yuma Regional Medical Center from 1974 until his retirement in 1996. He was Chief of Staff in 1983, and Chair of Credentials in 1984. In 2001, he was recognized for completing 20 years of service by the Medical Staff of Yuma Regional Medical Center.
A 27 year member of the White Mountain Range Riders, Dr. Schumack served as President in 1990. In the 1970's & 80's he was the volunteer team doctor for most local football and boxing programs. He was a member of the Yuma County Sheriff's Posse. He was also a die hard San Diego Charger fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen F. and Bernice Schumack.
Dr. Schumack is survived by his wife of 45 years, Olga; daughter, Paulette (Robert) Zades of San Jose, California; son, Stephen (Brenda) Schumack, of Yuma; five grandchildren, Gianna, Ezra, Seth & Elijah Zades, of San Jose, California, and Sophia Schumack of Yuma. The Schumack's sixth grandchild, Stephen, is expected February 2012.
Dr. Schumack is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Thomas (Gale) Schumack, of Navarre Beach, Florida; Laura Schumack, of Telluride, Colorado, Eileen Schumack DiBiase, of Chicago, Illinos, Patricia Schumack Mareci, of Paoli, Pennsylvania, Helen Schumack, of Telluride, Colorado, Rita Schumack (Patrick) Moyer, of Hollister, California, Marie Schumack (Roger) Hoffman, of San Antonio, Texas, and James (Kathy) Schumack of Chicago, Illinois as well as nineteen nieces and nephews.
A Rosary will be recited Friday, January 13, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass celebrating the life of Stephen Schumack is planned for 9:30 a.m., Saturday, January 14, 2012. Both events will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1815 S. 8th Ave, Yuma, Arizona 85364.
