PAGE — Michael L. Scantlin, aka “Smokey,” passed away Dec. 18, 2010, in Apple Valley, Calif. He was born Nov. 24, 1951, in Victorville, Calif., to Freeman and Chloe Scantlin.
Smokey was married to Sam (Helen) Scantlin on Dec. 5, 1970, in Riverside, Calif. Together they raised two children, Mike and Melissa, in Page for 30 years. They moved to Apple Valley, Calif., in 2002.
Smokey was employed by Salt River Project for 25 years before he became ill. NGS became his extended family. He was the first welder employed by SRP. He held many positions at NGS.
Smokey had a special place in his heart for the First Baptist Church. He served on various committees, enjoyed teaching Sunday School and serving his Lord. He loved his church friends dearly.
Smokey loved his family. He was extremely proud of the accomplishments of his children. He warmly welcomed the addition of his daughter and son-in-law. He was excited to be a grandpa and loved doctoring the many boo-boos that were brought to him. He was loved deeply by his family and will be greatly missed. He wanted to be remembered in this way, “Keep on smiling, I’ll see you soon.”
Smokey will be deeply missed by his wife, Sam; son, Mike and Ora Scantlin; daughter, Melissa and Brandon Brinson; grandchildren, Lane, Mariah, Kristie Scantlin, Ryan and baby-to-be Brinson; brothers, Jerry and Bob; brother-in-law, David (Dona) Rothrock; sister-in-law, Gloria (Gene) Porter; and many nephews, nieces, and dear friends.
